Secret Caverns Excursion - June 2013

So recently when visiting family in upstate New York I went on a little excursion to Secret Caverns, an amazing mom and pop esque establishment where you can walk down 120 feet into the limestone caverns below ground level and see a 100 ft waterfall! Unlike other underground caverns in the area Secret Caverns is a very one on one personal experiance kind of place, where a comedic and knowledgable tour guide will walk you down deep into the recesses of the cave to teach you about the local geology of the area!

The cavern is comprised of devonian age (coeymans) and Silurian Age (manilus) limestone, so essentially the rock in the cavern is 400 million years old! Which is freakin' awesome! The caverns however formed about 38,000 years ago during the last large scale ice age. However the cavern wasn't discovered in upstate NY until two unlucky cows that lived on the then farm property plummeted down 80 feet into the caves. The unlucky pioneers of one of the coolest attractions in upstate New York!

ONE of the best reasons I would say to check out Secret Caverns over their local (overpriced) competitors is the fact that you actually get to see the underground waterfall! I have been to the other underground caves in the area and was disappointed to only hear the waterfall, and be able to actually see the majestic site!

If your ever in the area definitely check them out! I had the time of my life down in the caves!

  1. Hi,
How do you get down there? Stairs? Freight elevator?
    Is it claustrophobic?
I will visit the website, too.
    Thanks!
